Introduction

Accident statistics show us that falls from height are THE biggest cause of workplace deaths and one of the biggest causes of major injuries every year.

Falling from heights is a common cause of injury and death in workplaces.

Working at heights refers to any work activity performed in any position that is elevated in some way.

Every time you climb a ladder or through some other method where you are working above the ground, you are placing yourself at risk of falling from a height.

The risk of serious injury is significantly increased when working at a height that is greater than 2 metres.

If working at heights is to be conducted, a JSA (or Safe Work Method Statement) is to be completed prior to work commencing.

Together, all relevant workers along with a competent person must:

Consideration of any potential exposure of others, workers or public in the area should also be included.

Risk controls should be laid out in a proper hierarchy so that the most effective controls are considered first.

The general rule is…
The higher the hierarchy the better the control!

In the first instance, it is far preferable to complete as much work as possible at ground level.

If this is not practical, then consideration should be given to completing the work on a stable work platform with either fencing, guardrails, scaffolding, overhead protection or other suitable physical barrier to prevent workers and material falling from a height.
