Manual Handling Risk Assessment for Supervisors/Assessors of Care Staff

Introduction

Statistics show that within the Health Services almost 50% of accidents reported under the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1985 (RIDDOR) are due to the improper handling of heavy loads.

Under the Manual Handling Operations Regulations that came into force on 1st January 1993 employers are required to make an assessment of all manual handling operations and to take remedial action where there is an identifiable risk to employees.

Aims

The course will teach Supervisors in the Care Industry how to assess manual handling tasks and manage/implement control measures, and will make them aware of their own, their staff's, and their employers responsibilities under the new regulations

Participants will be able to lift and handle reasonable loads safely and efficiently, minimizing the risk of injury and cumulative strain.

The course will show the importance of efficient body movement and position in the work situation and the inherent risk of back injury if they are not followed. It will teach methods of handling and transfer of customers/patients both manually and mechanically.

The course will make caring staff aware of, and define non-routine and emergency circumstances, e.g. a falling patient, and give advice as to what to do.
